Accessibility Statement

The University of Vienna is committed to providing accessible websites in accordance with the Austrian Web-Zugänglichkeits-Gesetz (WZG, web accessibility act) as amended to implement the Directive (EU) 2016/2102 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 26 October 2016 on the accessibility of the websites and mobile applications of public sector bodies (Official Journal L 327 issued on 2 December 2016, p. 1).

This accessibility statement applies to the website https://poetryoffthepage.net as well as its alternative domain https://poetryoffthepage.univie.ac.at and the associated domains https://allbordersblur.univie.ac.at, and https://takingthemic.univie.ac.at.

Status of compliance with the requirements

This website is partially compliant with Conformance Level AA of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines Web – WCAG 2.1 or with the applicable European Standard EN 301 549 V3.2.1 due to the following incompatibilities and exceptions.

We plan to gradually remedy the existing accessibility deficiencies. Digital accessibility at the University of Vienna is organised in a decentral way. The responsible persons (e.g. at the individual faculties) are included in the process of correcting the existing accessibility deficiencies.

Parts of the website that are not fully accessible

a) Aspects that are not compliant with the accessibility regulations

1.1.1 Not all images on all subpages have a meaningful alt text. Some linked images lack an alt text.

1.2.2 Some embedded videos lack captions except for auto-generated YouTube captions (e.g. the introduction video on the poetryoffthepage.net landing page).
1.2.3 Some embedded videos lack text alternatives (e.g. the introduction video on the poetryoffthepage.net landing page).
1.2.6 All embedded and linked videos lack sign language interpretation.

1.3.1 Not all headings have appropriate texts. Not all elements are correctly tagged.

1.4.1 Links in continuous text are not underlined.
1.4.3 Some headers, particularly on takingthemic.univie.ac.at, do not have a sufficient contrast ratio.

2.4.2 Not all documents contain a title.
2.4.4 Some links do not have discernible text.

3.1.2 The language for passages or phrases is not always specified.

4.1.2 Some ARIA hidden elements contain focussable elements.

b) Exemptions due to disproportionate burden

  • Videos on the website do not have an audio description (WCAG success criterion 1.2.5 Audio description is not met). The videos can be rated as additional content because the information conveyed is also available in text form on the website, or they are interviews without a feature film plot.
  • For new print and electronic publications, we endeavor to implement the accessibility requirements. In the case of less important older PDFs of print publications, we believe that the effort involved represents a disproportionate burden in terms of accessibility regulations.

c) This content is not within the scope of the applicable legislation

  • Older documents may not be provided with structural information (not tagged) so that they cannot be adequately understood and used by screen reader users. No comprehensive change is currently planned for older (published before September 2018), non-administrative documents that are still exempt from Directive (EU) 2016/2102.
  • Content by third parties, which is not within our sphere of influence, is exempt from the Directive (EU) 2016/2102. No statement can be made regarding the compatibility of this third-party content with accessibility regulations.
